The Blair County War Veterans Council sponsors the annual Memorial Day Parade in downtown Altoona.  Aside from the parade’s usual mission, this year the Council is inviting all returning Iraq veterans to participate and lead the parade.  All community organizations are also invited to take part.  To register or for more information, call Parade Marshall Floyd Dutton at 201-2202 or email dukef505@atlanticbb.net
The Blair Country Genealogical Society’s guest speaker 7pm Thursday May 17th will be Mary Netreba, on the subject of using Blair County as a backdrop for a Historical Novel, as she did for her book, “Rosemary for Remembrance”, set it 1908 Blue Knob. The First-ever Blair County Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk will be Sunday May 20th at Mansion Park in Altoona.  Registration starts 8am, and the walk begins at 9.  Minimum pledges raised to walk is $50, and proceeds benefit the Lustgarten Foundation.  For information call 931-2743
 
The next  Bellwood Antis Historical Society meeting is 7pm Monday May 21st at the Bellwood Antis Public Library. The speaker will be Michael Farrow on the History of Theaters, Opera Houses, and Nickelodeons in Blair County.  For more information call 684-4884
The Freedom Flier’s Ultra light Chapter’s annual Memorial day Weekend Fly-In will be at Ickes Ultra-Light Public Airport in Osterburg Friday May 25th through Monday the 28th.  There’ll also be model airplanes, powered parachutes and other displays. The James E. van Zandt VA Medical center will host an Armed Forces Day Celebration 9am to 3pm Saturday may 19th on Center’s grounds in Altoona.  There’ll be area veterans groups, military equipment displays, entertainment, and a 2pm ceremony with keynote speaker Sgt. Major Tim Hileman.  New veterans are invited to enroll for medical benefits, and should bring a copy of their DD-214 discharge papers.  For information call 943-8164
Operation Our Town’s Annual Crime Cleanup Day will be Saturday May 12th starting 8:30 at Highland Park in Altoona. Volunteers must register by May 4th by calling 296-8730 or by email at oot2@lsfiore.com
The Neil Armstrong Planetarium at Altoona Senior High School will be hosting two presentations each of two sky shows on Friday May 25th.  “Larry: Cat In Space”  is ideal for students ages 3 to 8, and will be shown at 5 and 7pm, “More Than Meets The Eye” is a vintage sky show for all ages, shown at 6 and 8pm.  Tickets are $4 for adults, $3 for students or $5 for adults and $4 for students for both the 5 & 6pm shows.  Reservations are required; call 946-8300 and follow instructions. 
The Hollidaysburg Community band will give a Free Concert 7pm Memorial Day Monday May 28th at the Canal basin park Band shell in Hollidaysburg.  Bring your own lawn chair or blanket.  Rain location is the First United Methodist Church on Allegheny Street
 The next Veterans Memories meeting will be Tuesday May 29th at the Bellwood Antis Public Library.  It’s open to veterans of all wars and guests.  Dinner is at 5:30.  For more information call 742-8777
The Fourth Annual Spring Fling at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church will be 11 to 3 Saturday May 19th. There’ll be children’s games, a petting zoo, crafts, donkey rides, and more in the parking lot and a food court in the church basement.  The Altoona Fire and Police Departments will have equipment on display, and there’ll be live entertainment.  The church is at 408 North Sixth Street in Juniata, and the street will be closed between Fourth and Fifth Avenues

The Unter Uns Club will host the 10th Annual Maifest Saturday May 19th. The Schnitzel Dinner is 5:30 to 7:30, The Schuhplattlers are from 7:30 to 8:30 followed by open dancing until 11, with music by The Polka Quads.  Tickets are $18, sold in advance only at the club or by calling 942-9439 or 944-0258 (no sales at the door).  The Club is at 1401 Van Buren Avenue in Altoona

The Apple Dumpling Gang Relay for Life team will have a Motorcycle Run Saturday May 19th, Leaving from the Swiss Rifle Club at 12th Street and Tyler Avenue in Altoona.  Registration is at 10am, kickstands up at 11:30.  the run is $15 per person, and after party for riders only is $5

Altoona Community Theatre will have Summer Workshops for Children and Teens, Grades 1 through 12 June, July and August At the Historic Mishler Theatre, with students preparing a short play for family and friends at the conclusion.  Registration fees range from $60 to $125 based on type of workshops. Veterans Memories is a growing group of local Veterans from all braches of service and of all wars and conflicts. They meet the last Tuesday of each month to share a home-cooked meal, memories and memorabilia, 5:30 at The Bellwood Public Library. For more information, call 742-8777
